EcoTopic AB was founded in 2012 – at a time when biochar was still a relatively unknown concept in Sweden. Since then, we have helped develop the field from early ideas to practical implementation, both nationally and internationally.
We are a small and specialised team working at the intersection of research, technology and business. Our strength lies in understanding the entire value chain – from feedstock and production to application, climate benefits and business models.
Today, we help organisations move from idea to fully functioning biochar solutions – technically, economically and practically. We work with:
decision support and strategies for biochar investments
testing and pilot projects within soil, water and environmental technologies
certification and carbon removal (Biochar Carbon Removal, BCR)
development of new applications, such as PFAS remediation
Through our sister company Biokolprodukter Global AB, we are also directly connected to the market, developing and supplying biochar and carbon removal solutions for urban soils and other applications. This gives us a practical grounding that few other actors have.
We have been part of the field for a long time – and continue to stay at the forefront by combining experience with curiosity and continuous development. We believe in testing, learning and improving. And we enjoy working with organisations that want to do the same.
Get in touch – let’s explore how we can work together.

We are EcoTopic
LottaEk
CEO
I work on transforming complex ideas into actionable biochar solutions – from early feasibility studies to financing and implementation.
With nearly 15 years of experience in the biochar sector, I have led more than 30 feasibility studies globally, focusing on production, business models and market development. I work closely with our clients on strategy, investments and project development.
As co-founder of both EcoTopic and Biokolprodukter, I have a strong understanding of the entire value chain – from technology to market.
I work with the technical development and implementation of biochar solutions – from production to application in different systems.
With a background in chemical engineering and energy systems, I have been involved in the development of several biochar projects, including the Stockholm Biochar Project. I have also supported cities in Europe and the US in establishing similar solutions.
At EcoTopic, I focus on technical advisory, certification and business development – with the aim of creating robust and scalable solutions.
I work with testing and evaluation of biochar in different applications, with a focus on water treatment, nutrient leaching and new use cases.
At EcoTopic, I am responsible for experimental design, analysis and knowledge development – including work on PFAS remediation and filtration solutions. I conduct testing on biochar, soils and filter media, and translate results into practical recommendations.
I have a background in horticultural engineering and combine practical understanding with scientific analysis.
